Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.3

Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.3 1600 900 Michel Arlia

The Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.3 is the new vitola from the well-known Habanos brand. It is the fourth release in the acclaimed Línea Epicure, the largest ring gauge, 54 x 125 mm (4 9/10”), and the first with a Figurado shape.

The Epicure No.3 is sold in a wooden SLB containing ten cigars.

The wrapper on the Epicure No.3 is quite oily with a Colorado shade to it. There are a few small veins present. Construction appears to be flawless, with a perfect draw and a generous filling.

Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.3: the cold draw reveals aromas of hay and clean tobacco. Once lit, it opens with notes of cappuccino and wood.

Further into the first third, a slightly bitter component is flanked by espresso and walnut. The strength is close to the medium level (2.5/5).

There is not much happening in the second third except for the strength now being a solid medium (3/5).

The final third sees additional aromas joining the profile of espresso and walnut, mainly black pepper and chili. The strength remains unchanged.

Overall, the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No.3 starts out quite promising but falls short throughout the last two thirds. While the freshness of the cigar is perceptible, mainly due to the unbalanced flavor profile, it remains to be seen how much better the smoke becomes, if at all.
