The José L. Piedra Petit Caballeros, was introduced a couple of months ago. The new release was coupled with a design update for the whole line. José L. Piedra, which are all Short-Filler cigars, is the budget brand from the Habanos SA portfolio. Compared to most of the Cuban cigars, that are rolled with tobaccos from the Vuelta Abajo region, this line uses tobaccos from the Vuelta Abrriba region of the island. With his 48 ring gauge, it is also the only size that has a ring gauge well above 44.
The cigar is quite rustic in its appearance, which can be expected from a budget cigar. The wrapper is of a Colorado Maduro color.

José L. Piedra Petit Caballeros: the cold draw brings notes of wood and spice to the palate. Once it is lit, the cigar opens with pepper, wood, and coffee.
Overall, the José L. Piedra is quite the surprise and the rating might be misleading in this case. The numbers of flavors are only a few in number, but they are well defined. The balance, while leaning more towards an acidic base, manages to stay in line and the construction wouldn’t make you think that this is a Short-Filler cigar. That being said, there is no evolution, nor depth, present, but with the cigar costing only 3 Euros and it being a Short-Filler cigar, it would be too much to ask. Nevertheless, it is still a surprisingly enjoyable smoke, that can definitely be recommended as a daily smoke for those that look for a more budget-friendly Cuban cigar.
